So far I’ve been talking a lot about products that I like, but I think it’s about time I mentioned some products that I didn’t like, or in some cases, HATED. I find these posts to be just as helpful as hearing about people’s favorites because you find out what to avoid. For this post I’m going to exclude products that were from a limited edition line that can no longer be purchased and products that I regret buying simply because they weren’t the best shade for me. I also not including products that were okay, but just didn’t wow me. I’m trying to stick to products that I find to be genuinely bad. Maybe you’ve tried some of these and liked them, but for me they were a big thumbs down.
1. Maybelline Expert Eyes Moisturizing Eye Makeup Remover: This may be the most hated product I have ever bought. I picked it up on a whim when I ran out of my usual makeup remover and it was terrible! It was extremely greasy and felt disgusting on my eyes. It left a thick greasy residue behind on my eyes after I used it which meant I had to wash them off again with a cleanser and SCRUB just to get it off. It was messy and got all over my hands and the bottle too which was annoying. It even caused me to get a couple tiny pimples near my eye area! To top it all off, it didn’t take my makeup off well at all. I had to scrub furiously (really great for your eyes, I know) and even then I always had leftover black smudges on my face the next morning. All in all absolutely horrible product.
2. Revlon Lash Potion Mascara: I was really hoping to like this because the packaging is so beautiful! However, it was overall a disappointment. It was really gloopy and clumpy and didn’t make my lashes look nice at all. I also found it to be hard to work with as the brush is very big and has strange bristles divided into 3 sections (which is not effective). This mascara also didn’t hold a curl nicely and it started to flake on me really quickly. Also, it dried out pretty fast. As gorgeous as the packaging is, I’m not feeling this product.
3. L’Oreal Magic Lumi Light Infusing Primer: This product is meant to give the skin a more glowy look (despite being called a primer it’s not meant to make foundation go on smoother or last longer). It says to either “Wear under or mixed with foundation for a soft light illusion” or “Highlight specific areas of the face to create a sculpted effect”. For me, this product doesn’t really work either of these ways. When I wore it under/mixed with foundation I didn’t really find it did anything at all. No difference. When I used it on top to “sculpt”, as they say, I found it just sort of sat on top. I couldn’t really blend it in and it just looked like a sticky wet patch on my face. It’s very liquidy and can get really messy. Also, it’s supposed to come out white, but when I pumped it out it had all separated into a clear, oily liquid with white blobs in it. Gross. This continued even after I shook it up. Also, for a drugstore product it’s quite expensive and only a small bottle. Skip it.
4. Maybelline Expert Wear Eyeshadow Quad: These eye shadows were just awful. They had almost no colour payoff at all, even if I tried to layer on a lot. They felt dusty and chalky, although I didn’t have to worry much about fall out since there’s NO PIGMENTATION. I realize it’s cheaper eye shadow, but I have found much better ones (for even cheaper sometimes) from the drugstore before. Do not recommend. I’d also like to mention the CoverGirl eye shadow quads. I had similar problems with those. Not quite as bad, but still disappointing.
5. Mary Kay Eye Liner: I’m shocked to see a Mary Kay product on here, but I’m afraid that’s the way it goes. This is probably the only product I’ve ever tried from Mary Kay that I didn’t like, although compared to the other products I’m mentioning it’s not that bad. I like the packaging on these since they are an automatic pencil and it comes with a little shaper on the top for a tip, but the formula didn’t work for me. It didn’t smudge, but I just found it really dry and didn’t give me a nice smooth line. I had to tug at my eye a lot to use it. The colours they come in are also all very dark which does make them wearable, but I like more variety. This isn’t awful, but considering that they are $16 each I think they could be better.
I hope that despite the negative tone of this post you still found it helpful. I often like to hear what didn’t work for people, so I thought you all might too! Let me know in the comments what products you regret buying, or let me know of any future blog posts you’d like to see. Thanks for reading!
